All hazardous chemicals can be grouped into nine broad categories:

  • Explosives.
  • Gases.
  • Flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Flammable solids.
  • Oxidizers and organic peroxide.
  • Toxic substances and poison inhalation hazards.
  • Radioactive chemicals.
  • Corrosive chemicals.
  • Other dangerous chemicals.

OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires that hazardous chemicals must be classified and assigned to a hazard category, must be labeled according to whatever category of hazard they are assigned to, and must have an accompanying Safety Data Sheet.

To summarize the key points:

  1. Classification and Labeling: Hazardous chemicals must be classified and assigned to a hazard category, and labels must reflect this classification. Labels must be prominently displayed, easy to read, and written in English, with additional languages as necessary.

  2. Label Components:

  • Product Identifier: Name of the hazardous chemical, matching the information on the corresponding SDS.
  • Signal Word: Indicates the severity of the hazard, either "Warning" for less severe hazards or "Danger" for more severe hazards.
  • Hazard Statement: Standardized phrases describing the hazard based on classification, such as "harmful if swallowed" or "flammable liquid."
  • Precautionary Statements: Briefly outline steps to minimize harm from exposure, including first aid recommendations.
  • Supplier Information: Name, address, and contact details of the manufacturer or supplier.
  • Pictograms: Graphic symbols communicating special information about the hazards of the chemical, following the GHS guidelines.
  1. Label Format: While there is no specific required format or layout for labels, they must include all the aforementioned components to comply with the standard.

By adhering to these labeling requirements, employers and workers can effectively identify and mitigate the risks associated with hazardous chemicals, promoting a safer work environment.
